Ever since the disbandment of Fifth Harmony, the fans and the general public have been waiting for each of the girls to launch their solo careers. Camila Cabello is the earliest to head her own way has two albums and the third one on the way to date. However, the other girls have not put out one yet. While the other girls have put out songs here and there, Normani and Lauren receiving the most spotlight out of the four, none of them were able to start their music era and put out an album for their anticipating fans.

Last week, Normani made her return to music after her song “Motivation” in 2019. The new track is titled “Wild Side” and features rapper Cardi B. The song immediately drew a great scale of attention for Normani’s return, its feature of Cardi, and the visuals that could represent Normani’s upcoming and first album.

Diving right into the review, I decided to listen to the song first before checking out the visuals. The song’s production isn’t upbeat but rather a song that I would play in the background while I study. The lyrics constitute a classic love song with a little bit of repetitiveness that doesn’t take away from the listening experience.

My favorite part of the song though was Normani, as she switched up her flow throughout the song and added her personality to it to make it feel personal. For me, Cardi didn’t contribute much to her songs. I felt that her verse lacked her ability to switch up flows and convey her emotions. Though it wasn’t her best work as an artist, she didn’t take away from the listening experience, as her voice flowed along with the song’s production.

Moving onto the visuals of the song, I thought it could be summed up with one word, “rare.” Nowadays with improving editing technology, it allowed many artists to create lazy music videos with the same visual effect that everyone has seen a billion times. In her music video, Normani has clearly shown that she put much thought and effort into the choreography, cinematography, and symbolism.

Being someone that doesn’t watch music videos that often anymore for the reason that most of the videos are “recycled” now, I was delighted and honored to put my eyes on the visuals that Normani and Cardi worked hard to bring to the table. The only thing that I ask of Normani now is that she finally begins her first musical era and brings us
her debut album.
