Camila heard our cries of "Don't Go Yet" and returned with a new single

Writer: Han Xuan ZhengHan Xuan Zheng

Soon after Normani’s return to music with “Wild Side,” came Camila Cabello’s third era. The former Fifth Harmony member released the lead single off her third studio album, “Don’t Go Yet.” It was the pop singer’s first major release after “Romance” in 2019, and I had to prepare my ears for the greatness Camila was about to bring to the table after what a wonder “Romance” was.

Before watching the music video, I had to show appreciation to the song itself first. For my first listen, I was surprised how even though the new single was way different from most of the songs from her last album (I could maybe draw a connection to “Liar”), but I still liked the new single. It enacts as the divider between Romance and Familia, declaring the death of the “Old Camila” and the rebirth of the new. Production-wise, I really saw a connection between Liar (Romance’s lead single) with the Latin root beat.

Lyrically, you can’t expect much usually for lead singles as they are meant to hit the radio, but Camila’s personality shined with her flows throughout the song, which in the end made up for the loss in the lyrics. It was a great song to declare the new era with, but I am personally more excited about the album as a whole.

Moving onto the music video, I’ll share three things I liked and three things I thought could be improved.

Things I liked:

  • The colors, how Camila and the director chose a vibrant palette of colors compared to her last album, which had more toned colors for its theme.

  • The Skit, creates a friendly atmosphere between the dancers and Camila, creating a sense of “Familia.”

  • The diversity, how everyone looked like they were having fun and not just on a job.

Things I thought could be improved:

  • The Choreography, though it may have been intended, I thought choreography did not match the song. (I loved the part when Camila fell to the floor, begging for the man to stay as she grabbed onto his leg, it adds precision to the story)

  • The Shots, I thought the music video didn’t have any outstanding shots where I was like “Wow! That’s a cool way to transition.”

  • The Ending, I thought throughout the music video, it was obvious that the dancers were having fun, but the ending just made it feel a little awkward. Although I can see Camila’s purpose of keeping it in, to create a sense of intimacy between the dancers and Camila, or the “Familia.”

Overall, I am very glad to be here for Camila’s third release soon, and I can’t wait to see what the album is about. In the meantime, Fifth Harmony fans have a chance of seeing the other girls returning!
