That Familiar Spot in Chinatown

Writer: Han Xuan ZhengHan Xuan Zheng

Hong Kong Egg Waffle Food Stand

Location: Near 18 Bowery of Manhattan's Chinatown

This was one of the first desserts that I had when I immigrated to the U.S. I still remember when my mom would use to bring me to this spot by the side of the sidewalk with the familiar-looking lady who was always making this dessert. This dessert is called the Hong Kong Egg Waffle.

Not only does it taste like the sweet with an eggy flavor, but it also contains the scent of my proceeded childhood. Ordering it again for the first time in several years, I was taken back by the soft texture that keeps you chewing on the doughiness. The flavor was perfect for someone like me who isn’t into desserts that are super sweet, it was just the right amount of all the ingredients sprinkled with bits of my childhood memories.

Whether or not I’ll ever speak to the same, dear lady again and make an order, that stand always has a place on that sidewalk and in my heart.
