New Experience: Korean Barbeque!

Writer: L LinL Lin

One of the most known perks of living in New York City is the diversity in cultures and of course cuisines-

Korea Town is located right next to the Manhattan Macy’s Mall that attracts dozens of residents and tourists every single day as the covid restrictions are lifted and many people have returned to work. As a popular style of Asian cuisines, there are several Korean BBQ restaurants in the tiny neighborhood that only took up 2 blocks of the city.

After years of Chinese Hotpot, I thought it was a good time to try something new since my birthday was right around the corner. Interested in how Korean BBQ works, we picked a restaurant that cooks for you and has an All You Can Eat Menu. Although the cost is higher than an average fast food meal, that’s expected for a nice meal in New York.

As I entered, I was amazed at the well-designed interior and the large space inside. As I settled down with my friends, we were asked to scan a QR code for the menu instead of a traditional paper menu.

The food was served shortly after we ordered and the server cooks the food and cleans the grill for you occasionally. I really appreciate how they leave the table once the meat is cooked so you can eat and talk freely and they’ll be back when you’re done with the current servings.

Overall, the experience is really enjoyable but there are minor downsides too. Such as the prices increased but weren’t updated on the Google Maps App, (make sure to check their official website!) and that the heated grill might splash drizzling oil on your skin since you're sitting very close in front of it.

One of the biggest differences between American and Korean Barbeque is the marination and the side dishes. In KBBQ, they’ll provide you with pickled vegetables and special sauces that are authentic and foreign. Moreover, their menu also provides cold noodles and tofu stew that mimics a traditional BBQ restaurant that would be in Korea.

Definitely worth a try! Especially with a large group of friends, KBBQ is a great choice of cuisine if you all are interested in Asian Food and Korean Culture!
