Are you ready for school?

Writer: L LinL Lin

Lisa's Perspective:

Ever since Nov. 19, 2020, NYC schools transitioned into all-remote education, all NYC students were forced to adapt to the brand new method of teaching and learning.

Slowly, everyone got used to this foreign style of life. As time ticks by, we all changed the way we act to adjust to the sudden change in the world.

Much research has been done, mental health concerns have been rising ever since the very beginning of quarantine. Before school starts, before all the school workload, and before all the peer pressure, please remember to take some time and relax.

All of us took advantage of this summer break to settle down, explore, and chill by having control of our own time and schedule. During this time, I had the chance to meet new people online and explore more hobbies of mine. As an artist, I got to learn and try out new art types like pixel art and enhanced my understanding of human anatomy through practice. As a student, I enrolled myself in a few online courses and sat through many SAT study sessions with the Pomodoro clock. Above all, my favorite achievement was the amount of practice I got on cooking and how I explored my taste preferences along the way.

Challenge yourself to learn something new, to pick up old hobbies, and don't let time slip away without a plan. Before school starts, set new goals and new expectations!

Dennis' Perspective:

And just within a blink, summer whooshed by like the waves receding back to its home; or how Taylor Swift says it best, “August slipped away like a bottle of wine.” As summer approaches its end, it also means that school season is beginning.

I observe that there are two kinds of people at the end of summer. One that wishes it was longer so they could enjoy the feeling of the summer wind and solar heat, and the other that looks back on the months. For me, I like to reflect at the end of every stage of my life and compare who I was before and who I am now.

This summer has been not only a break but a lifesaver for me. As an incoming senior in high school, approaching the final grade of high school means that I am bombarded with the worries of the college application process. Looking back now, here are some of the goals I achieved: exercising to maintain my health, studying and taking the SATs, writing my essays for colleges, and catching up with friends that I can’t see as I am quarantining. On the other hand, as I believe a reflection isn’t complete by simply looking at the growths, I want to look at goals that I didn’t achieve as my next steps, and these are: start reading more books, get back and make time for painting, go out more (in a safe way) to take pictures more often, and hanging out with friends in person.

So, with that being my side of the story, do you find yourself to be one of the two kinds of a person at the tail of summer, or are you someone else?
