blackbear brings us to misery lake

Writer: Han Xuan ZhengHan Xuan Zheng

From conversation to conversation, asking friends for music suggestions, I have heard the name “blackbear” suggested several times. With all the excuses and reasons that I had stopping me from giving their music a shot, I finally found a time to today. Here was my reaction and ranking to blackbear’s recent EP drop, misery lake.

Ranking:

Album Average: 8.3

Track One: alone in a room full of people

Score: 7.7/10

Track Two: @ my worst

Score: 8/10

Track Three: u love u (with Tate McRae)

Score: 8.6/10

Track Four: ghost town (feat. Sasha Alex Sloan)

Score: 8.3/10

Track Five: imu (feat Travis Barker)

Score: 8.45/10

Track Six: bad day

Score: 8.75/10

Overall, I thought the album didn’t lack production-wise, especially in track three with the snaps (any song with snaps in the background will become a favorite for me). However, I found that I wish the songwriting was a little more precise. I was piecing together a story with a portion of all of the pieces, with some missing, and I wish blackbear could’ve provided me with the remaining pieces to the puzzle. Nonetheless, I am glad that I gave this EP a listen and grasped a sense of what blackbear may be all about.
